Malta Airport was named Best Airport in Europe in the 2011 Airport Service Quality Survey – for the second year in a row.

Commenting on this achievement, Mr Markus Klaushofer, CEO of Malta International Airport said “This prestigious placing in the world’s leading Airport Passenger Survey is a sign that our airport is on the quality map that counts. When your end-users give you this type of certificate, it gives you confidence and energy to know that all the hard work is reaping results and that we’re on the right track.

“We all feel proud of this consecutive ranking as Best Airport in Europe. But we also have to continue to strive harder and not get complacent, keeping in mind the service quality levels we offer and the overall strategic role our airport performs in the Maltese Islands’ tourism industry.”

Second place went to Edinburgh Airport, winning its first ever ASQ Award.

Edinburgh Airport is Scotland's busiest airport. More than 40 airlines serve 100-plus destinations and some 9.3 million passengers a year pass through the airport – figures which are set to grow as Scotland's international connections develop. It is the 6th largest in the UK and employs over 5000 people, contributing hundreds of millions of pounds to Scotland’s economy.

2011 was an excellent year for Edinburgh Airport, winning several other prestigious international awards.

Edinburgh Airport’s brand is “Inspiring Journeys” which allows it to focus on providing its passengers with an inspiring journey through the airport. By encouraging dialogue with passengers and acting on what they say, Edinburgh has been able to provide levels of passenger experience and satisfaction that are not normally found at an airport of its size.

Porto Airport, another longstanding ASQ Award winner placed third in the 2011 ASQ Survey rankings for Europe.

“For the sixth consecutive year, we are proud to have been chosen by our passengers as one of the best airports in Europe. This year we came in 3rd. This is our 7th award in the last six years and is particularly important to us at a time when the number of passengers in our airport increased 13.7%, surmounting the 6 million mark. We will continue to work on a daily basis to remain among the best in the world”, commented Mr. Fernando Gaspar Vieira, Porto Airport's Director.

"We use ASQ key drivers on an annual basis as a starting point for our efforts to improve service quality at Porto Airport. In 2011 we focused mainly on improving passenger comfort through the following initiatives: better pedestrian access to the passenger terminal, more free internet access spots, year-round live music in the departures area, improved channels and signage for transfer passengers, passenger and other stakeholder oriented events throughout the year, new shopping areas, more parking spaces, updated flight information displays, new shuttles services to and from Porto and Braga as well as free wireless access inside the airport lounge."
